Children can surprise you. They will do things you didn't think they would. However, it is up to the adult to allow them the freedom to chose and to encourage children.

Our teachers found materials to make 'ooblick'. This easy recipe is equal parts water and cornstarch (detailed recipe is below) The result is a liquid and a solid. While this sensory exploratory sounds messy and may require a little bit of clean-up, the learning and growth is worth it!
Children were learning about properties of different substances, cause and effect, and increasing their fine motor hand strength. Teachers allowed children to mix the solution themselves, dumping the materials in one at a time. The turn taking was amazing to watch.

Children were given the chance to explore without instructions. Teachers modeled touching the substance and moving it around in the tub.
One child stepped into the tub to feel it on her toes. "It feels cold". - child

This encouraged other children to do the same. Children continued to take turns going in and out, laughing with each other.
It is important to allow children the choice to do things on their own. As adults, we model appropriate behavior. But sometimes we may model too much. Take a step back and TRUST children to make their own decisions. They will take that step when they are ready.

Ooblick Recipe
You need:
Cornstarch
Water
Tub
Mix equal parts water and cornstarch into a tub. Be sure to add the water slowly and mix as you go. You may not need all the water. Once you get the consistency of a liquid/solid you can stop. You do not need to cover this and it will last a week or so. If it dries out, add some water.
